AI Demand Fuels Surge in Taiwan–Germany Trade

2026/04/30 | By Sherry Chen

Taiwan’s exports to Germany saw a sharp acceleration in the first quarter of 2026. According to data released by the German Trade Office Taipei, Taiwan’s exports to Germany reached USD 2.12 billion, representing a 28.3% year-on-year increase.

The strongest performing electronic component sector saw a growth of 71.2% to USD 490 million. Information and communications technology (ICT) and audiovisual products also posted solid gains, increasing 20.4% year-on-year to USD 557 million. These sectors highlight Taiwan’s increasingly firm partnership as a hardware backbone supporting Germany’s digital transformation and AI adoption.

On the import side, Taiwan recorded USD 3.12 billion in imports from Germany in the first quarter, a modest decline of 5.5% amid global supply chain adjustments. However, imports of precision machinery rose 24.1% to USD 635 million. This reflects Germany’s continued advancement in high-end manufacturing technologies, which remain essential to Taiwan’s semiconductor and advanced manufacturing upgrades.

According to the German Trade Office, the latest data illustrate the “highly complementary” nature of the bilateral industrial relationship. Taiwan’s strength in semiconductors, ICT, and AI hardware aligns closely with Germany’s capabilities in industrial technology and advanced machinery, creating a mutually reinforcing ecosystem for innovation and industrial upgrading.

Recent engagements between German industry associations and Taiwanese stakeholders, particularly those specializing in cooling technologies, decarbonization solutions, and industrial automation, are increasingly exploring opportunities to expand beyond semiconductor applications into broader industrial sectors in Asia, with Taiwan serving as a strategic entry point.

In prospect, the German Trade Office will continue to facilitate cross-border collaboration. The forthcoming Taiwanese-German Aerospace Conference, scheduled for May 5, will bring together 12 German companies across satellite components, unmanned systems, aerospace materials, and precision sensing technologies. The initiative aims to strengthen cooperation in emerging sectors such as low-earth orbit satellites and drone supply chains.
