PlayNitride: MicroLED Expected to Enter Networking Applications Within Two to Three Years
2026/03/30 | By Sherry Chen
Dr. Yun-Li (Charles) Li, Chairman of the Taiwan Optoelectronic Semiconductor Industry Association (TOSIA) and Chairman of PlayNitride Inc., suggested that MicroLED technology is expected to be adopted in optical networking applications within the next two to three years, signaling a new phase of commercialization beyond display technologies.
Speaking at the 2026 TOSIA Awards, Dr. Li noted that MicroLED has already gained traction in consumer electronics, such as smartwatches and televisions, as well as in automotive displays and augmented reality (AR) devices. This expansion is expected to thrive in optical communications.
MicroLED optical interconnects are particularly suited for short-distance data transmission, typically within five meters.
Although copper solutions continue to improve in speed, energy efficiency has emerged as a critical constraint. Dr. Li emphasized that the high power consumption of copper transmission is reinforcing the industry to opt for optical solutions. This has shortened the transition timeline from the expected three to four years to approximately two to three years.
For PlayNitride, MicroLED adoption remains strongest in wearable devices, with growing applications in automotive, large-scale, and transparent displays. Emerging demand in AR glasses is also gaining momentum, with new orders currently under discussion, reflecting expanding commercialization opportunities.
